| "Simon is the perfectionist as speechwriter: not only a flair for the word and phrase, but also thorough research and an attention to detail and accuracy which comes from his past life as a senior ministerial adviser." |
| |
| "Simon runs a speechwriting workshop as part of the University of Cambridge's Masters degree in Creative Writing. He balances an entertaining and engaging style with erudite insight and practical useful advice on how to construct a compelling speech. He makes the students laugh and he makes the students work, indeed producing some outstanding material. I don’t think any of them will forget the workshop. I cannot recommend him highly enough."

| "I've worked with dozens of Whitehall speechwriters and Simon is not only the best, he is in a league of his own." "Simon gave me a fantastic introduction to the art of speechwriting. I use many of the techniques covered on a daily basis." "This was one of the best courses I've ever attended. The calibre of speakers was excellent - we heard from people that had actually been there and done the job extremely well. The rhetorical tricks of the trade we learnt have been invaluable. A fantastic refresher for experienced speechwriters, and an eye-opener for the less-experienced. This course will change the way you think about communication." "Enlightening and entertaining. This course kickstarted my career in speechwriting" "The Mansion House Speech Team prepares more than 800 speeches a year, more than any other Cabinet-level speech office, so we and other speech-producing colleagues in the City of London Corporation need to pull back from time to time to re-focus and re-energise ourselves. In our experience Simon Lancaster from Bespoke is absolutely ideal to help both seasoned and new speechwriters to get to grips with the essence of the art. His work is both imaginative and grounded and valued by all. Book early, book often." "The course was invaluable. Every time I write a sentence that really nails it, it's because I've applied the techniques that Simon taught me." "Great day. Great course. Great insights." "Really inspiring." "This course has been a revelation: not just through appreciating the art, but by sharing experience and meeting interesting people. It has been thoroughly appreciated and enjoyable. Many many thanks." "Thoroughly excellent. Best training I have ever done." "Very helpful. Covered all the things I wanted." "Good combination of writing technique and strategy." "Attend this course only if you want to become a deeply inspiring leader. Simon helped me become significantly more passionate, engaging and persuasive in content and style." "Lucy wrote me a wonderful speech at very short notice and gave me excellent service, guidance and support throughout. The final speech went very well and got the audience thinking about the importance of living your life to the full. At the end, many of the guests came up to me and said the speech was excellent. Thank you so much!" |

Great Speech Writing has private and business clients based all over the world. They range from senior people in the private and public sectors giving high profile speeches, presentations and pitches, to best men, fathers-of-the bride and nervous grooms worried about their wedding speeches.
We have a very simple purpose: to help clients around the world write, edit and deliver their speeches and presentations. We are lucky enough to have professional clients in parliaments from Brussels to Westminster and social clients performing in marquees from Bristol to West Lothian. But whoever the client and whatever the subject, our speech writing mantra is consistent: Keep it relevant, ensure it’s appropriate and make it original.
We’re happy to chat to anyone about a speech, whether you want us to write it from scratch, or just need a bit of advice. Wherever possible, we will try to help them create something simple, intelligent and original. We’ll never charge for a phone call and our discretion is assured.
Our Director:
Lawrence Bernstein. After graduating in History from Peterhouse, Cambridge, Lawrence became chained to a desk in the City. One night, he sat in a pub dictating a best man speech to a friend about to leave for a wedding in Vegas. The friend (Mark) suggested this might be a more enjoyable way of earning a living. It was a light bulb moment. The next morning, Lawrence placed an advert in Private Eye Magazine for a new speech writing service. Nine years later, he manages ‘Great Speech Writing’ and our small team of writers from our office in North London. He continues to write speeches in addition to helping clients build communication strategies. He stays involved in every part of the business, and remains true to his original promise that no speech is too big or too small. If you would like to contact Lawrence directly please email him.
Our team of writers:
Dolan Cummings is our senior speech writer. He has been writing and delivering speeches for years. His previous work has ranged from writing at the BBC to chairing public debates in London and elsewhere on everything from the arts to international politics. He admires speakers from Martin Luther King to Chris Rock. Dolan works on a huge range of speeches and corporate writing assignments. He has an extraordinary eye for complex detail and a knack of drawing the right information from clients in a short period of time!
David Elliott is an experienced writer, specialising in humorous speeches for weddings and after-dinner speakers. In addition to speech writing, he also writes comedy material for page, stage, and broadcast (including sketches, one-liners, and topical comedy prep), and is passionate about creating funny, engaging material for performers and non-performers alike. His short fiction has appeared in many magazines and anthologies over the years, and his satirical articles are regularly published by a variety of comedy websites.
Ben Timpson spent over 13 years in the armed forces as a strategic communications specialist and advisor to senior leadership teams around the world. He has a wealth of experience delivering communication campaigns in high pressure, politically complex circumstances. As a former spokesperson he also understands the unique pressures placed upon those tasked with speaking on behalf of an organisation – and what it takes to succeed. Alongside consultancy, Ben is also a speechwriter who loves nothing more than the challenge of winning over a difficult audience with a dry subject! When he’s not writing your speech, he can be found in the test match special box commentating on his favourite sport.
Ben Duncan-Duggal is a writer with range. He brings five years of experience in communications and politics, which has involved writing across a diverse range of formats and contexts. Ben’s produced speeches for Parliament and has ghostwritten articles for the Guardian, Times, Mirror, the Independent and elsewhere. He’s at home with everything from copy for your website to riotous best man’s speeches. In his spare time he can usually be found on the terraces at Selhurst Park watching his beloved Crystal Palace or with his nose in a book.
With a librarian for a grandfather and a lawyer for a father, Becca Stogdon ‘s life was always going to be about words. An English degree at St Catherine’s College Oxford may have helped hone her writing skills, but she feels it’s understanding people and what makes them tick that make the difference when writing speeches. Becca prides herself on really listening to a client to be able to draw out their stories and write a speech for them in their own tone of voice.
When she’s not shaping words, she’s busy growing and buying flowers, designing events and delivering flower arrangements for weddings, parties, businesses and private homes all over the country.
Theo Eze is one of our senior speech writers and our resident web content specialist. Having studied English Literature and Creative Writing at University, he quickly developed a style perfectly pitched for speakers at events around the world. His range stretches from weddings, funerals and birthdays to TedX talks and corporate speeches.
Theo can write to make audiences laugh, cry, learn and feel inspired. The key is getting to know you and your audience as well as possible in a short period of time. He prides himself on his ability to communicate with and understand the needs of clients from all walks of life.
Theo has been instrumental in the growth of our copywriting service, providing web copy that’s as engaging as it is effective for a range of companies, from plucky, quirky start ups, to established industry leaders. He enjoys the challenge of making web copy readable and SEO friendly (no easy task!).
In his spare time he enjoys writing, recording and playing music, hiking the Peak District, watching anime and supporting his beloved Manchester United.
Will Howard is a creative writing graduate from North London. He is a playwright, theatre producer and arts writer who has worked for NME, Kerrang!, Songkick and FAITH Drama Productions over the past decade. Specialising in heartfelt, sincere speeches, Will’s empathetic, sensitive presence is hugely beneficial to nervous or emotional speakers. He also supports the client management team and may be the first voice you hear when calling us!
Anna O’Kennedy: It’s not always easy to find someone who can write, offer advice, coach and run projects. Then along came Anna! She previously worked as a business consultant and then a secondary school English teacher (and Head of Year). Together with her love of the written and spoken word, this enables her to work in every part of the business, from defining a company’s internal communication strategy to writing a speech for a Mother of the Bride. Anna is based in the office and loves a chat, so she may well be the first person you speak to on the phone.
Shahed is a writer, editor and journalist with work published across digital and print including in HuffPost, Vice, Stylist, and Cosmopolitan. If she’s not writing, then she’s probably reading! She specialises in simple, clear, elegant copywriting, ranging from short articles on fashion to 100,000 word technical training manuals.
Our trainer:
Alys Wallinger’s background is in both writing and acting for theatre, film and TV. As a writer, she trained under the prestigious Royal Court Young Writers’ Programme and Criterion New Writers’ Programme and has since written plays which have toured nationally to critical acclaim. As an actress, she was worked in the West End playing a range of interesting roles. She understands what it is to feel the pressure of performing and can empathise with those feeling nervous. Her experience has enabled her to learn key tools and tricks to manage nerves, channel pressure and deliver an optimum performance. As a Delivery coach Alys has worked with clients from a background of different sectors including: NGOs, Charities, Literary Festivals, Sporting agencies, Banking, Investment Management, Livery companies, Entrepreneurs, Marketing companies and Recruitment.
Our office managers:
Our client managers; Lisa, Anna, Ben and Sophie are likely to be your friendly first port of call when contacting us.
They liaise between our clients and writers, ensuring that you get what you want when you want it!
Katie Hedges joined us in 2014 and manages the accounts and runs our online projects. She previously worked for eleven years as an Account Manager at a German web agency and has an extraordinary eye for detail and impeccable calmness under pressure. Wedding Toasts: How To Write A Father Of The Bride Speech
You’ve walked your daughter down the aisle, and have just watched her marry the love of her life – now it’s time to make your father of the bride speech. This is such a big day, full of love and happiness, and a brilliant father of the bride speech can make or break the evening (so no pressure!).
But, there is probably a lot you want to say – and you’re likely wondering ‘how can I condense years of pride and affection into a short but great father of the bride speech?’ Never fear, we’ve got loads of useful tips and tricks to make your toast the cherry on top of an already amazing day.
What should you include in a father of the bride speech?
With loads of memories and stories about your daughter (and her partner) that you could share, getting your ideas on paper is the hard part. But, there are a few core elements that are always included in all the best father of the bride speeches that can give you somewhere to start writing.
We’ve even put our suggestions in an order for you to follow – consider this a father of the bride template from us to you!
Start by thanking the guests
It’s pretty standard practice to thank your guests for attending during a father of the bride speech. Whether the wedding is for 20 or 200 people, everyone has made an effort to be there, so you should take some time to recognise that in your speech.
Of course, while you can thank the wider guestlist more generally, make sure to call out certain people by name. These include your daughter and her new spouse, your partner, your new in-laws, bridesmaids and groomsmen, and other close family members involved in the wedding – basically everyone that has been a key contributor to making the day a success.
We recommend starting your speech with any thanks, but keep it fairly short. You don’t want to bore your audience before you’ve properly begun your father of the bride speech.
Praise your daughter and the person she has become
As the father of the bride, your speech is a time for sharing stories and memories of your daughter. From when she was born and her childhood, to stories of her as she grew, this is the time to share silly memories and tell everyone how proud you are of her.
Stuck for ideas? We suggest picking out some of your favourite qualities of your daughter to share with the wedding crowd. This is your time to be honest and make your father of the bride speech unique. Everyone can say a bride is beautiful, or funny – you don’t want people to think that you’ve copied some random father of the bride speech off of the internet.
Instead, you have insight into the woman she is, (who she really is), so share something quirky and original to tailor your father of the bride speech specifically for her.
Maybe you’re proud of how much she cares about family, her determination and ambition, or even that she can recite a specific scene of her favourite film! Whatever you choose, make sure to keep it light, positive, and personal to celebrate her on one of the biggest days of her life. Aim to have people laughing and crying in equal measure – and don’t be afraid to shed a tear yourself.
Share memories of the couple
Of course, the day isn’t just about your daughter – it’s also about her partner. So, make sure you spend some time talking about the new member of your family. This could be with funny stories about how they met, the early days of their relationship and how you felt on meeting them for the first time, or stories from the present.
Like with your daughter, make sure they know you’re proud of the person she has chosen to spend her life with. Remember, you’re not losing your daughter to someone, you’re gaining more family!
We suggest spending most of your time talking about your daughter and her partner on their wedding day – that way you’ll have the rest of the wedding party eating out your hands with an emotional, funny, and brilliant father of the bride speech.
Give some words of wisdom or advice
Whether it’s a quip about dealing with some habits of your daughter, or how to make her favourite treat, the best father of the bride speeches always have some advice for the couple.
Some lighthearted teasing and funny advice is bound to get some laughs, and you can then switch the tone with some more serious words of wisdom for the happy couple. Offering some tips about marriage, or even just reminding the couple that they can always come to you for help and advice, is a great way to start rounding off your father of the bride speech.
End with a toast to the happy couple
Now you’ve done the hard part – but don’t forget you want to end strong. That’s why you should finish off your father of the bride speech with a heartfelt toast to the newlyweds. This is the time to round up everything you’ve said, (maybe slip in one last joke), and raise a glass to your wonderful daughter and her new partner.
Then it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the celebration safe in the knowledge that you delivered a brilliant father of the bride speech.
Things to remember
Using our father of the bride speech template above is a surefire way to make sure your speech stands out and makes the best impression on the other wedding guests. But, we do have a little more advice for you…
- Introduce yourself : make sure everyone knows who you are before you get into your father of the bride speech. Remember to introduce yourself, and even slip in a small joke to help you (and the crowd) relax.
- Do NOT embarrass your daughter : this is her wedding day, so maybe keep some of the more embarrassing stories for another occasion. We’re not saying you shouldn’t include some funny stories, but make sure they’re ones she will laugh along with as well.
- Don’t force funny : peppering your father of the bride speech with some jokes is one thing – but don’t try to shoehorn jokes in for the sake of it. Stories and memories will tend to get some laughs anyway, which will make your speech feel much more natural.
- Speak from the heart : part of writing the best father of the bride speeches means speaking from the heart. Be honest and genuine, and there won’t be a dry eye in the house when you’re done.
- Tell your daughter you love her : this is an obvious one, but sometimes you can get swept up in the details and forget the simple things. Whatever you say in your speech, don’t forget to tell your daughter you love her.
- Keep it short : weddings are a celebration! So, you don’t want to drone on and on until people are bored stiff. Keep your father of the bride speech to about 10 minutes max – although six to eight minutes is even better.
- Practice : keeping to time, and making sure your speech feels smooth is hard. Spend some time practising before the big day (and don’t be afraid to keep some cue cards with you if you need them).
