IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

Being a celebrity - such as famous film star or sports personality - brings problems as well as benefits. Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems.

Model Answer:
It is often argued that celebrity status, notwithstanding fame and wealth, is often plagued with problems like lack of personal space and constant media glare. I strongly believe that the benefits of celebrity status far outweigh the problems and over the course of this essay will provide reasons for this viewpoint. There are various reasons why people believe that celebrity status is a curse. Primary reason is the lack of personal space. Due to constant media attention and fan following, celebrities find it difficult to enjoy the simple things in life. For example, Indian national team cricketers are treated like demigods in India. Consequently, the cricketers find it rather difficult to venture in public spaces like shopping malls or hang out with friends and family in restaurants. This constant media attention could be overwhelming at times. On the other hand, every coin has two sides. First of all, celebrities through their fan following can influence the society in a positive way. For example, Rajnikanth a famous movie star from India has a larger than life image. Recently his support and encouragement to local bullfighting sport influenced millions of students to hit the road and protest against government decision to stop bullfighting. Consequently, government was forced to reconsider the controversial decision. Another reason is, celebrities through their work, motivate and inspire millions of fans and general public alike. For instance, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has acted as a role model for generations of youth and has inspired them to reach out for the sky; no dream too big, no challenge too great. Having considered a range of arguments, I have concluded that benefits of being a celebrity greatly outweigh the problems. From influencing the public in a positive way to acting as a role model, the benefits are far and wide .

IELTS Speaking Part 1 : Celebrity
IELTS Speaking Part 1: Celebrity
What qualities do you believe make someone a celebrity?
If somebody can influence others, has fame, and is good at their actions, that person becomes a celebrity.
Why do people become fascinated with celebrities’ lives?
Celebrities’ lives live a life to showcase people. They gain their popularity by doing so. People get fascinated because they believe that celebrities are the role models. The style, power, and money inspire them.
Can you name a celebrity who has had a positive influence on society?
There is a classical singer. Her name is Maythali Raj. She was a contestant in a singing competition on television. People admire her work because she is perfect in how she sings. She is growing the culture of Indian classical music. She follows Western trends. She is putting India’s map on a global level. She is very inspiring. How do you think social media has changed how you interact with your fans? Sorry, sir, your voice is breaking.
How do you think social media has changed how celebrities interact with fans?
Suppose I talk about the era when social media was not available to everybody; at that time, people used to have a glance at their popular culture. In Beijing, they used to queue and celebrate their presence. Now, social media is happening in its place. People follow their celebrities and favourite people on their apps, Instagram, and YouTube. These celebrities are making good money out of it.
What are some common misconceptions or stereotypes about celebrities?
One of the most common misconceptions is that celebrities are always happy. Everybody is a person, and then she may be a celebrity. They have a family and their issues. They have their own stories. However, they only portray the good things on social media or in public. People assume that celebrities are rich and famous. Then, they might not be having any issues. But that is not true.
How do you think celebrity endorsements influence consumer behaviour and brand perception?
This term is used for the person who represents that brand. The person is known as a brand ambassador. They are known as an ambassador for a reason. When they connect to that brand, the people who admire that person automatically tend to learn and buy that product. The popularity has something to do with consumer perception. If people admire a specific personality, they only think a little before purchasing the product.
How do celebrities use their platform and influence to advocate for social and political causes?
Social and political conflicts are a part of everybody’s life. But it takes hype in the news when it comes to famous people. It often leads to a change of thought and perception of their fans. The people who follow their celebrity wholeheartedly and are diehard fans, those people can have a similar perception on radio.
How does the media shape our perceptions of celebrities?
Media, in general, especially the paparazzi, who try to capture the real-life moments of celebrities, give them an edge simultaneously. They are also invading their privacy. So whatever media showcases to the world, people rely on it, not knowing what reality is and what is not. So, the media can be misleading sometimes.
What are your thoughts on the concept of celebrity worship?
It’s good to admire somebody and get inspired by their personality. But having your take on several aspects which are very important to society is very important. You cannot blindfold yourself and follow the fame of somebody famous because they are good at what they do. People should have the intellect to think about issues and decide right from wrong.
Do you wish to be a celebrity in the future?
I don’t wish to be a celebrity in the future because fame is not for me. I have different plans in my life. I want to do things in a very different way. I want to have my personal life and live like a person who can celebrate things in the crowd. The disadvantage of being a celebrity is that they cannot enjoy the little things in life. I want to enjoy that, so celebrity is not one thing for me.

Ielts writing tip.
Step 1: Underline keywords in the exam question. This will help you focus your answer on the key points, then brainstorm ideas for both sides of the argument, that is, both for and against the issue.
Step 2: Show clear links between the main argument and the supporting arguments. In your introduction, re-word the question showing the topic clearly and state the opinion(s) that you will go on to discuss. Remember that each paragraph should have one main argument – start a new paragraph when you start a new main idea. Develop contrasting views, problems and solutions, advantages and disadvantages. Make sure you justify each point with clear supporting material. Do not forget to provide a logical argument wherever you refute the opposing opinion.
Step 3: Provide a strong conclusion. Conclude your essay by summarising the main points and stating your own personal view.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Film stars and music celebrities may earn a great deal of money and live in luxurious surroundings, but many of them lead unhappy lives. Do you agree?
To what extent is this the price they pay for being famous?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Model answer.
Newspapers and magazines are full of stories about famous people and the wonderful lifestyles that they enjoy. I think it’s something that we get used to. We expect to see them wearing very expensive clothes and, going to amazing parties. It seems natural that if you have a lot of money, you will spend it in these ways.
Some people who are rich and famous do manage to have a happy life as well. They get married and have children and, although they have to work hard, they still have time to give to their family. Victoria and David Beckham are just one example of a happy celebrity couple.
However, money doesn’t always bring happiness. In fact, sometimes the opposite is true. Stars often talk to the press about the pressures of being rich and famous. Some of them end up drinking too much or taking too many drugs. The actress Elizabeth Taylor, for example, has been in clinics many times for these problems. The divorce rate is also very high among celebrities. Often their marriages last only a short period of time and they re-marry very quickly but the same thing happens again.
Ultimately, I think it depends on the person. I don’t really believe that being unhappy is a consequence of fame but I do think that it may be very difficult to cope with having a lot of money and fame. Celebrities are ordinary people underneath and perhaps some of them are not strong enough to deal with their fame.
