Hi! I'm a senior in high school and I want to go to school for nursing next year. I'm applying to an internship at an Urgent Care center that is requiring me to write an essay on why I want to be a nurse. I want to write the best essay possible, so Im asking if you could give me some pointers on how to make this better (be as critical as you want!)

What Nursing Means To Me

Through the last four years of high school, I have been tormented with the thought in the back of my mind that I need to choose what I want to do with my life. Since I was little, I have gone through many different career dreams. First I wanted to be a veterinarian, then a dancer, then a model, and then an astronaut. However, when I came to my older years and started thinking seriously about what I wanted to do, I was lost. Opinions from my parents, family, relatives, friends, and well-meaning adults all pressured me in different directions, but I wanted to come to the decision on my own. Finally, through researching many different careers and trying to figure out what I would like, I gradually realized that nursing is the perfect job for me.

I have always been taught that helping people is the most satisfying way of life. While some people would argue that money is the way to happiness, others' and my own experiences have shown me that giving to others is the best way to find true joy. I'm fortunate enough to have known others working in the medical field, and they have all shared the same sentiment: that despite all the hard work and dedication their job requires, they wouldn't give up their job for any other because of the satisfaction that helping people gives them. This is why I have decided to be a nurse. I'll be able to fulfill my desire of helping people while also experiencing the challenge, variety, and opportunities that nursing offers. Nursing is not only a job, but also a powerful way to impact others and make a difference in people's lives. Hearing from what people say about nursing, it sounds like the most fulfilling career that anyone could have. Knowing now what I do about the nursing career, I can't imagine myself having any other job.

In addition to emotional fulfillment, being a nurse means having the power to care for others while also having my needs taken care of. By this, I mean there is a lot of security in being a nurse. Jobs in the medical field will always be in need, so I will be able to find a job that suits me easily. There is also a need for nurses worldwide, so I can fulfill my goals of travelling and still making money and helping people wherever I go. Nurses have a well-paying salary, so I'll be able to support myself independently in the future and I'll also be able to support a family. Another practical reason is nurses can work in flexible schedules, which would allow me to have free time to engage in personal interests, care for my future children, and engage in personal volunteer work. Additionally, there is a great variety of different types of nurses, so I'll never be bored with my job choice as I can always switch to a different department and expand my learning opportunities.

I truly believe I am suited to become a nurse. I am determined, caring, and hard-working, qualities that are essential for a nurse. Having the opportunity to impact someone everyday would not only be helping someone else but it would be helping me as well. The nursing profession requires dedication but in turn it gives an exciting, diverse, challenging, and ever-changing work environment. It allows an opportunity to learn something new everyday, which is something that I value highly. Is a nurse internship possible for someone who doesn't have a nursing license and isn't even enrolled in a nursing school?

I have the same question as Sour Lemon.

As far as the essay, take out the flexible schedules, job security, and good pay - they don't care how it will benefit you personally. Add something about your particular interest in urgent care and why you feel it will be a strong stepping stone into your nursing career.

Also, if you have evidence of why you feel fulfilled helping people and why you are suited to doing so as a nurse, include that. Have you volunteered at a hospital or nursing home, shadowed a nurse, etc.? Being a nurse does involve helping people, but equally important to having that motivation are organization and time management skills, interest and ability to apply the science of nursing, and a reasonably strong stomach and sense of confidence. Lots of professions help people; nursing is unique in the precarious balance it strikes of exercising both your heart AND your brain.

No, its not a specific internship for nursing its just generally for high school students with no experience. So I just need to write the essay to apply but its not really going to be specifically for nursing

OK, now I'm even more confused. What is the actual job title and what guidance did they give you as far as what you're supposed to write about? "What Nursing Means to Me" is not a title that makes sense if you're not a nurse. You shouldn't be calling yourself "nurse" in your user name just yet, either ...wait until you actually earn it. :)

My calling to nursing started when my father got diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. I watched him suffering through radiation and chemotherapy, but what got him through those hard times was the help of some great loving and caring nurses. As I became more involved in taking care of him, my passion for nursing had greatly increased. Now, for nine years, I have maintained a commitment to caring for others in the field of Nursing. Being a registered nurse (RN), I have taken care of one patient at a time, which I have been involved in the amelioration of lives, and have only been left wanting to give and do more. Pursuing a master of science in nursing (MSN) is more than just a logical or natural progression for my career. A chilly morning it was! Present at the hospital ward was five of my friends from my class. Was at the obstetric ward, sadly enough, my friend Sasha and I were present in this ward. Admitted a pregnant mother at around half past ten, and attended to her, soon enough, she was ready to deliver. We took all the necessary procedures to ensure her smooth delivery, it took only an hour and a half, and there came a baby. Oh my God! What the hell! The newborn could not be determined whether it was a he or a she. Then the doctor on duty told us that, it must have been a case of hormonal debris at the genitals but confirmed that it was a girl. Soon enough, the parents insisted that we carry out a test to ascertain whether it was a girl or a boy. Karyotype was undertaken, and we found out that there were forty-six chromosomes, but XY was prevalent. The conclusion was that, the newborn was a baby boy. This was a unique case, from Monday all through to Fri we never encountered such exceptional birth. We managed to deliver ten births from Monday all through to Wednesday, but this particular one was unique. Throughout my studies, I have always learnt about gender ambiguity. It then dawned on me that this particular instance was an exemplary case of gender ambiguity. The new skill that I learnt about this internship is the use of karyotype to determine the chromosomal concentration of a newborn. This internship opportunity was exceptional as it broadened my knowledge scope in nursing.
