Sooryavanshi movie review: Akshay Kumar's high-octane action film is your Diwali gift this year
Sooryavanshi movie review: akshay kumar's veer sooryavanshi is a worthy addition to rohit shetty's cop universe..
Finally releasing after 19 months, Sooryavanshi is nothing short of a celebration of mainstream Hindi cinema, bringing back whistles and cheers to a theatre after a long time. Sooryavanshi is fuelled by director Rohit Shetty's trademark action and Akshay Kumar brings it in abundance.
Sooryavanshi is not a three-hero film as the posters and trailers might try to make you believe. It's an out-and-out Akshay Kumar action film with special appearances from Ajay Devgn, who plays Singham, and Ranveer Singh, who plays Simmba, in the last 30 minutes. These 30 minutes are the film's highlight with its high-octane action, cars getting blown up, some stunning hand combat choreography taken to a new level, and the action-hero trio in their best form.
Watch Sooryavanshi trailer:
Sooryavanshi begins after the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai. 13 years later, when a terrorist group is back in action and planning another mission, DCP Veer Sooryavanshi, (Akshay Kumar), the head of Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad, is assigned the task of finding their whereabouts and stop the attacks.
With hardcore masala films, it's easy to assume that you can leave your brain at home and just enjoy the experience. But with a film like Sooryavanshi, that introduces countless characters on the screen, one after the other, you need to be your alert self and join.
That being said, Sooryavanshi isn't driven by a great script neither does it have any extraordinary suspense that could bring nail-biting moments. Yet, it keeps you on the edge for the sheer joy of watching that over-the-top action. Shetty picks various elements — romance between Sooryavanshi and his wife Riya (played by Katrina Kaif), their relationship with their son Aryan, his camaraderie with the members of his ATS force — and weaves them together for a fulfilling climax.
While Devgn's Singham was more intense and Ranveer's Simmba was the quirkier one, Akshay's Sooryavanshi is a mix of both. He is tough in scenes that require him to be that, evokes laughter in lighter scenes, or awe with his smashing entry on the helicopter. Though at some places, Akshay struggled to remain in character and looked perplexed with a busy storyline.
Sooryavanshi is fast-paced its second half is when all the tension builds up and things get more intriguing. Yunus Sajawal's screenplay is engaging and gripping but still a bit patchy. Even the average dialogues by Farhad Samji, Sanchit Bendre and Vidhi Ghodgadnkar aren't something that leave a lasting impact.
Performance wise, the film scores full marks. Katrina, with her better than before Hindi, is convincing as a loving wife and a doting mom. Then there's a great lineup of supporting cast including joint commissioner Vikram Bedi (Javed Jaaferi) whose heavy voice adds gravitas to the role he's portraying. Among the terrorists, the mastermind behind Mumbai blasts, Bilal (Kumud Mishra) and Lashker chief Omar Hafiz (Jackie Shroff) and his sons played by Abhimanyu Singh and Mrunal Jain, live their part well. Gulshan Grover, Nikiten Dheer and Sikander Kher have small yet crucial roles. Rohit, unwilling to delve in grey area, makes sure his good men are too good and bad ones don't even try to look good.

Amid all this, recreating Tip Tip Barsa Pani could have been simply avoided. Quite frankly, I couldn't watch it beyond a few seconds. Or maybe we can't imagine anyone other than Raveena Tandon in that yellow saree. Katrina tried a bit too hard but it didn't quite work. As for Akshay, he clearly looked better with Raveena and perhaps, should have just said no to this remake.
And once again, Rohit Shetty takes the opportunity to announce yet another outing. But as of now, go watch Sooryavanshi to make your Diwali even more special.

‘Sooryavanshi’ Review: Cops on a Crusade
The latest in Rohit Shetty’s Bollywood cop franchise is both overstuffed and paper-thin.
- Share full article
By Devika Girish
Over the last decade, the Bollywood director Rohit Shetty has built a flamboyant Cop Cinematic Universe with crowd pleasers — “Singham,” “Singham Returns,” and “Simmba” — about righteous policemen with anger issues and physics-defying stunt capabilities. Shetty’s latest installment tries to up the ante (a fool’s errand, given how over-the-top each of the prior movies already is) by smushing them all together: The movie’s titular Anti-Terrorism Squad officer, played by the action veteran Akshay Kumar, is joined by the supercops of the previous films (Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh) for a bullets-and-brawn extravaganza.
But movies are not math, and three is not always better than one. “Sooryavanshi” is both overstuffed and paper-thin. Its haywire maximalism — including a relentless, deafening soundtrack and cuts so rapid and inconsistent as to make you dizzy — ornaments a patchy bomb-scare plot whose heroes and villains are both numbskulls, making unconvincing gaffes to keep the narrative moving.
Even more egregious is the film’s uncritical jingoism. Shetty’s crusading state warriors, whose violence and vigilante tactics are played for laughs and hoots, have always seemed a bit tone-deaf, but “Sooryavanshi” veers into apologism: The film is rife with gleeful scenes of police brutality and pernicious stereotypes about Muslims. Whenever Sooryavanshi is confronted about Islamophobia ( an increasingly urgent issue in India ), he starts singing the praises of the single Muslim cop on his force as if to remind everyone what a “good Muslim” looks like.
“Sooryavanshi” is weighed down by such endless, didactic soapboxing, while the rest of this erratic film devotes itself to juvenile jokes (Sooryavanshi referring to his wife, Ria, as “Hernia” and “Malaria”) and sultry songs that offer the film’s female lead, Katrina Kaif, her only meaningful screen time.
Sooryavanshi Not rated. In Hindi, with subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 25 minutes. In theaters.

Runtime: 145 minutes

Action, drama and lots of entertainment!
In 1993, Mumbai suffered a series of twelve bombings that shook up the city and the country. This was one of the very first major terrorist attacks that put the focus of the world back on the India-Pakistan dispute. This is where Sooryavanshi begins. After losing his parents to one of the attacks, Veer Sooryavanshi played by a very fit, fine and charming Akshay Kumar joins the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). He’s a serious man with a stern face when he’s on the job but has his personality quirks when he’s with his family and friends. He’s married to Riya (Katrina Kaif), a doctor who’d treated him after he was shot at a few years ago. The couple however does not live together and the reason for this is told in a sudden flashback with a romantic number. Riya and Veer have a son named Aryan who once got shot in the shoulder as he was caught in a crossfire between his father and the bad guys. This caused their marriage to break up and Riya decided to stay away from Veer since then.
To continue with the story, Lashkar head Omar Hafeez played by Jackie Shroff has planted six hundred kilograms of RDX in India. Forty of his men form a sleeper cell and live in India for over ten years, led by Hafeez’s son Riaaz (Abhimanyu Singh). This sleeper cell wakes up when Riaaz is captured by Sooryvanshi and starts to plan a bigger bombing than 1993. The film takes a rather slow and stretched turn to explain all of this and bring back the memory of the terrorist attacks the country has faced in the last three decades. There’s a sudden shift in the second half with the entry of Simmba (Ranveer Singh). He makes you chuckle with every line he delivers. Simmba plays quite a pivotal role in the second half and he’s the reason the bomb attacks are averted in time.
Then comes the final act. Riaaz captures Riya and holds her hostage along with the officers in the ATS headquarters that he intends to blow up. A very serious scene turns into a laughter riot when Simmba talks to the terrorists about the repercussions their job will have on the economical, financial and social conditions of Pakistan. This is a small prelude before he breaks the fourth wall to announce the arrival of the third cop in the universe, Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn). Another grand entry, another round of action-packed fight sequences, bullets fired and cars blown up. Singham saves the day.
Now we have the three cops working together. They first get rid of the last bomb and save Riya. Then comes a long fight sequence with some funny punch lines. Sooryavanshi, Singham and Simmba combine to get rid of the terrorist menace and as a bonus, we also get to see a glimpse of what Singham 3 will be all about.
Director Rohit Shetty has made sure to add as much detailing and back story to every character to keep you connected to the plot. There are moments where the film gets slightly preachy and there are other moments that make the audience emotional over religion, suffering and the partition. There is an elaborate scene where a mosque and a temple have to be evacuated and the head priest of the temple wants to carry the Ganesh idol with him. Unable to do so alone, he is joined by the head priest of the mosque. The song Hum Hindustani plays in the background as they carry the idol out.
There is a Rohit Shetty signature in every scene. Everything you can possibly think of is blown up every fifteen minutes. There are bike chases, car chases, helicopter chases and a jet-ski chase as well.
Sooryvanshi is an outright entertainer that comes packed with patriotic punches. It also adds the third peg to Shetty’s Cop Universe. Akshay Kumar is perfect as Sooyavanshi. From his gait to the way he talks, you like him from the word go. Katrina also delivers a good performance and shines in one of the most emotional scenes in the films. Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn too excel in their Simmba and Singham avatars.
Sooryavanshi is a treat that’s been served to us this Diwali and you cannot imagine a bigger or a crazier reason to go back to the theatres than this mad entertainer.

'Sooryavanshi' film review: Suave and stylish Akshay Kumar wows with thrilling action
With the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai as the starting point, Rohit Shetty's 'Sooryavanshi' traces the terrorist activities of a militant group whose chief, Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff), remote-controls their actions from Pakistan.
How DCP Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar), chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad, along with his team, prevent Hafeez's sons and the sleeper cells based across India, who are galvanized into action to destroy India, particularly Mumbai, forms the crux of this film that extends to two hours and a half.
While the narrative is strongly reminiscent of Rohit Shetty's earlier films in terms of flavour and feel, this one is unadulterated entertainment with action, drama, and even a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. There are trite moments when the unity of India and its secular fabric are forced down one's throat, courtesy of DCP Sooryavanshi's sermons.
The film, expectedly, belongs to Akshay Kumar, who with his commanding screen presence, credible action, and charisma, hooks the viewers as Sooryavanshi. He may not be offering anything new by way of histrionics, but there is comfort in his familiar style and his action scenes are a treat to watch.
The scene where he is chasing Sikander Kher and lifts him onto a flying helicopter from a speeding motorboat is superbly choreographed.
Akshay Kumar is ably supported by an ensemble cast of actors which includes Kumud Mishra as Bilal Ahmed, Vivan Bhatena as Vivan and Gulshan Grover as Kadar Usmani, all of whom perform well, enhancing the quality of the film. Abhimanyu Singh as Riaaz Hafeez, the key leader of the mission and Jackie Shroff's son, delivers a strong performance. Katrina Kaif as Sooryanshi's wife, Dr Ria, merely adds to the glamour quotient.
Sleek action and daring acts with cars overturning and structures being blown off characterize the film, in Rohit Shetty's inimitable style. Of course, one must not stop to analyse or seek rationale, else disappointment sets in.
The dialogues are powerful, hard-hitting, and seem real in the given context, and at times even succeed in arousing a patriotic fervour.
The background score, with 'Sooryavanshi' pounding your eardrums when Akshay Kumar is on screen, is a bit overdone, but the rest of the music, especially 'Tip tip barsa paani' from 'Mohra', is a mellifluous experience.
Other policemen from Shetty's cinematic universe -- Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh) -- also make an appearance. The duo is actively involved in the action, albeit a bit mindless and overextended, in the last 15 minutes of the film. Ajay Devgn is his usual self, although Ranveer Singh's forced goofiness is a tad annoying.
In its entirety, 'Sooryavanshi' is a thorough entertainer and Rohit Shetty's indelible stamp is etched in every scene. If you love hardcore action drama, this one is for you.

Sooryavanshi Movie Review: Akshay Kumar will do anything to save Aryan
Sooryavanshi movie review: rohit shetty delivers exactly the dhamaka he promised us back in march 2020. is the akshay kumar, katrina kaif film worth the long wait read on..
Listen to Story
Cast & Crew
Akshay Kumar
Katrina Kaif Actor
Ranveer Singh Actor
Akshay Kumar is described as 'pagal' right before we see him jump off a helicopter in his introductory scene. You know he's the man to depend on, the man who will deliver the punches and give you a full paisa vasool experience when he's described as such.
In Rohit Shetty's much-awaited - and this isn't just another adjective in this case - film, Akshay's Veer Sooryavanshi, an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officer, sets out to save Mumbai, India, and his son, Aryan, and others like him. He bashes goons, chases potential terrorists parkouring across roofs, all to keep his son, Aryan, and others like him safe. Even if, at times, that means being misunderstood for choosing his duty over everything else. Watch to know what we mean.
Veer is married to Riya (Katrina Kaif) and are parents to a son, Aryan. Given Katrina and Akki have been cast together, a few mandatory song-and-dance sequences had to be added. The pair have always sizzled on screen, therefore a recreation of Tip Tip Barsa Pani toh banta hai. It is another story that despite Kat slithering with the utmost earnestness, you will be reminded of Raveena Tandon's yet-unmatched oomph. Another song, Najaa, was also put in to - what we can imagine - give you the chance to check your phones and answer essential texts, for once the songs are over, and the punches - and cars - begin to fly, you will not be able to take your eyes off the screen.
The conflict in Rohit Shetty's cop universe this time is terrorism. The 1993 Mumbai blasts have left several scars and about 600 kg of RDX behind, buried in an undisclosed location on Indian soil. To jog your memory, The Family Man Season 1 had a similar conflict, where Manoj Bajpayee chases a similar lead to Kashmir, stops the attack, but fails to nip Plan B in the bud. In Sooryavanshi, Akshay's Veer has a similar task at hand, except with much more production budget, crescendoing background music to match beats with every gunshot fired and bones breaking. And in that, he has the support of Javed Jaffrey, the ATS Chief, and eventually Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh). Though the two arrive only in the final climax fight scene - and are granted befitting entries with Ajay's revolving jeep and Ranveer's Scorpio ramming through walls - they get just enough screentime so as to not take away from cop universe debutant Veer Sooryavanshi.
The result, of course, is a 30-odd minute climax with cars and men somersaulting over more cars and men, bombs going off like Diwali firecrackers in Noida despite the ban, and the music reaching a deafening crescendo. But you do not complain, move in your seat, check your phone, even sip your coffee even as it turns cold in the cup holder, because that's how tightly Rohit Shetty holds your attention. Of course, he has Akshay Kumar's able shoulders to rest his magnum opus on. Magnum opus, can I say that? Never mind that, just keep watching.
So if Akki, flanked by Ajay and Ranveer are fighting for the good, secularism, the idea of desh beyond religion, the foil, border ke usspaar, have to be equally menacing, ruthless and unreasonable. Badla is what they seek - no points if you guessed that, and because of that batwara that happened back in 1947. Leading these men from the front is Jackie Shroff, who will remind you of Mission Kashmir's Hilal Kohistani. This time, as Lashkar Khan, he is equally obsessive but is suaver.
Here, at the risk of spilling out spoilers, we'd say, watch out for that one scene between Ajay's Singham and Jackie's Khan and see if you can catch a hint about the next film in Rohit Shetty's cop universe.
In the acting department, there's nothing to really flaw because these men - and this woman, Katrina, we mean - are so comfortable with this kind of writing that they come in with a home-ground advantage. The dialogues are cheeky if not witty, and are delivered that way for best impact. For instance, when Ajay disembarks his revolving jeep, Akshay goes, "Ala Dev, Gun gheo (with, in Marathi)," or when the youngest Simmba calls the other two 'purana chawal' and add Apna time ayega. Laughs, smirks, and full entertainment guaranteed.
And isn't that exactly the purpose of a Rohit Shetty film? Those who sit and analyse Sooryavanshi and compare it to anything else other than another Rohit Shetty film, this film is not for you to begin with. Sooryavanshi is full paisa vasool. Rohit Shetty delivers exactly what he promised us one and a half years ago in March 2020. After months of delay and debates over whether Sooryavanshi should have been released on OTT or were the makers right to wait for the theatres to reopen for the audience to experience it in its full glory, is the film worth the wait? The answer is a loud yes - with of course the Sooryavanshi sound effect resounding in the background.
For those from this school of thought, Happy Diwali!
We're going with 4 stars out of 5.

Sooryavanshi Review: Is Akshay Kumar's Film What The Doctor Ordered For Post-Pandemic Bollywood? Almost
Sooryavanshi review: akshay's gait is stunt in itself: a cross between a model in the middle of a catwalk and a superhero about to take flight. katrina kaif pulls off a tip tip barsa paani rejig with aplomb..
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Jackie Shroff, Javed Jaffrey, Sikandar Kher, Abhimanyu Singh
Director: Rohit Shetty
Rating : 2.5 stars (out of 5)
After Singham Returns and Simmba , it was evident that Rohit Shetty's cop actioners were in dire need of a bit of policing themselves. The fourth in the series, Sooryavanshi , attempts a course correction. The results are at best middling. Some parts of the film are solid, others rather starchy.
The action is once again 'designed' by Shetty himself. So, Sooryavanshi has its share of automobiles being blown up, turning turtle, or ramming into strategically placed obstacles. We saw the best of such stunts all of a decade ago in Singham . Nothing that Sooryavanshi unleashes on the action front catches us by surprise. That apart, the film takes its own sweet time to lay out the dense details of the hero's mission: the prevention of a repeat of the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.
Sooryavanshi is far less thunderous than Singham . It plays out more like regular police procedural than a crusading cop-fighting-a-corrupt-system drama. The hero, a crack Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) man, has his task cut out. A bunch of militants from across the border are still in hiding in different parts of India and biding their time.
What's worse, intelligence inputs suggest that back in the 1990s one tonne of RDX was smuggled into Mumbai but less than half of it was used in the serial blasts of March 12, 1993. The remaining explosives are buried somewhere, waiting to be used in another big terror strike.
The sleeper cells are under the command of Riyaz Hafeez (Abhimanyu Singh in his second release of the Diwali weekend after the Rajini-starrer Annaatthe ), son of the Lashkar chief Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff). The Sooryavanshi plot centres on the police operation to find the hidden RDX and neutralise the sleeper cells.
Sooryavanshi and his men have to contend with a whole bunch of other terrorists - some in India, some in POK. Among them is Bilal Ahmed (Kumud Mishra), one of the men who got away after the 1993 serial blasts despite the best efforts of the decorated Mumbai Police officer Kabir Shroff (Jaaved Jaffrey). The enemy is both within and without. The action, therefore, moves out of India occasionally, most notably to Bangkok, the site of a car, copter and ski boat chase that culminates in the hero nabbing a man (Sikandar Kher) accused of helping a terrorist.
Despite the great danger hovering over the nation, Akshay Kumar's committed and intrepid cop stays within the parameters of the clean-cut screen image that the actor has developed of late. The policeman he plays is distinct in style and substance from the tough-as-nails, irate-as-a-wasp Bajirao Singham and the jocular, jaunty Sangram Bhalerao (of Simmba). In other words, Veer Sooryavanshi is the sort of lawman who prefers to err on the side of stodginess.
Early in the film, someone refers to the film's protagonist as paagal (insane). But this man in uniform, who is summoned to locate the 600 kg of RDX that has remained unaccounted for 27 years after landing in India, does not quite live up to that description. He is a straightlaced, earnest cop. He certainly doesn't have a streak of madness in him.
Although Veer Sooryavanshi isn't given to flying off the handle in Bajirao Singham's aata maajhi satakli manner, he is usually quick on the draw and averse to waiting for orders from his superiors. One such instance of haste leads to his estrangement from his doctor-wife Ria (Katrina Kaif).
Their love story begins when Sooryavanshi checks into a hospital with a bullet wound. Ria treats him. He falls for her. They marry. A few years down the line, the couple separate because he chooses duty over family. It is easy to see why. He is a true-blue warrior: nation above all else and all that!
He launches into righteous lectures at the drop of a hat. He even harps on communal harmony. The Mumbai police does not see a man's religion, only his criminal antecedents, before pulling the trigger, he asserts to a pickpocket-turned-religious leader played by Gulshan Grover.
In a sanctimonious scene aimed at underlining the difference between a patriotic Muslim and a perfidious one, something that Hindi cinema never tires of doing while merrily carrying on with its stereotyping of a community, Sooryavanshi holds up a former associate Naeem Khan (Rajendra Gupta), who served the police force with distinction for 30 years, as a contrast to a suspect who has been summoned to the ATS headquarters for questioning.
If that were not enough, another scene shows a maulvi and his men carrying a Ganpati idol to safety when word spreads that a bomb has been planted in an area where a temple and mosque stand side by side. To get a rise out of the audience, Chhodo kal ki baatein kal ki baat purani/Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayin kahani hum Hindustani (from the 1961 Hindi film Hum Hindustani ) plays on the soundtrack. You desperately want to warm up to the sentiment. Unfortunately, it does not ring true.
Well into the second half, the film brings back the heroes of both Singham and Simmba to fight the terrorists alongside Sooryavanshi . In-jokes flow thick and fast as the three men team up for the climax in the ATS building.
Bhalerao tends to get on the nerves of the other two and is brusquely ticked off a few times. "I think you are both jealous of me. Koi baat nahi, apna time aayega ," he retorts. It is another matter that Ranveer Singh frequently steals the thunder of the more seasoned stars.
For Akshay Kumar, from Bell Bottom to Sooryavanshi , this performance is no more than a hop and a skip from one set to another. His gait, as always, is a veritable stunt in itself: a cross between a model in the middle of a catwalk and a superhero about to take flight. It is aimed at his fans. If it works for them, who are we to carp?
Katrina Kaif pulls off a Tip tip barsa paani rejig with aplomb. But in a film overrun by three larger-than-life cops displaying their wares, a doctor is left with little to do other than negotiate the fallout of a derailed marriage.
Just like Simmba had provided a glimpse of what was to come in the next instalment, Sooryavanshi indicates what the future might hold for the Rohit Shetty cop universe. Brace yourself for another cops-and-terrorists faceoff with the character essayed by Jackie Shroff getting greater play than he does here. That might be something to look forward to.
To end, the million-dollar question: is Sooryavanshi the film that the doctor ordered for Bollywood's post-pandemic era? The answer is: well, almost.

Little Bites
An abundance of horror movies lately underestimates the emotional intelligence of their viewers, choosing to pound home their metaphors instead of leaving them with unanswered questions. Horror needs to be a little gray, a little hard to decipher, and a little debatable as to its meaning and purpose. When it’s not, and it shifts from mood to message, it loses its power. That’s one of several things that happens with Spider One’s frustrating “Little Bites,” a movie that constantly puts its themes in its performers’ mouths instead of letting them play actual characters and trusting us to meet the film halfway.
Krsy Fox, also at FF with “Terrifier 3,” plays Mindy Vogel, a widow we meet in a living nightmare. She has sent her daughter Alice (Elizabeth Phoenix Caro) to live with her grandmother (Bonnie Aarons) as a way to protect her from the demon living in a basement room in their home, a creature named Agyar (Jon Sklaroff) that looks a bit like Nosferatu. Seen mostly in shadow, it’s a humanoid monster that feeds off Mindy, scarring her with ‘little bites’ instead of just devouring her outright. It’s a form of control and a metaphor for addiction—a monster that often feeds off parents in a way that makes them incapable of raising their children—but also just the difficulty of motherhood. The repeated point is that Mindy will answer the bell every time that Agyar rings it if it keeps Alice safe. Motherhood is tough. And this is conveyed through scene after scene of Fox looking increasingly drained by her situation as Agyar physically, mentally, and emotionally abuses her.
There’s a short film in the concept of a demon that literally drains the lifeforce of a single mother, but Spider One expands that idea past its breaking point with a series of what are basically standalone encounters. A CPS worker named Sonya (the great Barbara Crampton) appears on Mindy’s doorstep, wondering where Alice might be. As good as Crampton is in these scenes, they make little narrative sense in that it doesn’t seem particularly illegal to say that a child is living with their grandmother for a few weeks. Still, they’re poorly shaped in a way designed to produce tension that Mindy’s secret might be revealed. Ditto a scene in which Mindy brings home a guy (Chaz Bono) from the bus stop to try and give Agyar a heartier meal. This sequence turns into awkward comedy involving some poorly drugged ice cream, unsure of what it’s trying to say about its protagonist or her desperation. Every exchange in “Little Bites,” even a one-scene appearance by the great Heather Langenkamp, feels unnatural, either weighted with metaphor or uncertain about its characters.
It’s likely this narrative inconsistency and direction to play theme instead of reality that leads to some of the wooden, awkward performances. The horror icons like Crampton and Langenkamp make it out unscathed—they always do—but almost everyone else looks lost as often as they look frightened or empowered. Exchanges like the ones between Mindy and her mother don’t sound remotely genuine, which constantly breaks the spell that a film like this needs to cast to be effective. Fox gives it her best shot (I’m pretty sure she’s in nearly every scene), and I’d be interested in seeing her challenged by a part like this again. Still, it’s so disheartening to watch someone give their all to a movie that doesn’t know what to do with her character or performance. Motherhood is tough. So is filmmaking.
This review was filed from the world premiere at Fantastic Fest. It premieres on Shudder on October 4 th .
